Here’s everything we know so far about Team Ninja’s upcoming Open-World, Action Adventure RPG game Rise of the Ronin
2024 is shaping up to be a remarkable year for gamers. With blockbuster titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown already gracing store shelves and many more highly anticipated releases on the horizon, action-adventure enthusiasts will have no shortage of options.

Rise of the Ronin was first announced in PlayStation’s 2022 State of Play event, where the developers released a reveal trailer. While not much of the gameplay was shown in the trailer, we got a glimpse of the overall setting.
Most people thought it would be a soul-like game similar to Sekiro with its Japanese setting. But later, the developers revealed that the game would have a multiple difficulty setting. Though it’s designed to be a challenging game, it won’t be on the same level as a FromSoftware game.
We got another trailer for the game at The Game Awards 2023 event on December 7. This one was a pre-order trailer and to the crowd’s excitement, showcased a few extra bits and pieces of the action and combat in the game. The game also officially got a release date: March 22nd, 2024.
Still, we didn’t get anything concrete until the recent gameplay by PlayStation showcasing the new mechanics in the game like the Glide Avicula and the Grappling hook. It also showcased some bits of a boss battle which was pretty exciting!
What We Know About Rise of the Ronin
The great thing about Team Ninja is how they gave us a release date and managed to stick with it so far. Games getting delayed is a pretty common thing these days unfortunately. However, with this one, the devs seem hellbent on keeping their promise.

1. Premise

Rise of the Ronin transports you straight to the heart of Edo in the late 19th century during the turbulent Bakumatsu era – the final, chaotic years of the Edo period. This was a time when the old feudal order was crumbling under the weight of change.
The Boshin War serves as the backdrop of the game. The ruling Tokugawa Shogunate waged a bitter, bloody war against the rebel factions. Talk about being smack dab in the middle of a pivotal turning point in Japanese history!
And with the studio’s track record of blending intense action gameplay with narratives steeped in Eastern philosophy and tradition, this feudal powder keg will serve as the perfect backdrop for an immersive, one-of-a-kind ronin adventure. The stage is set for something truly special.
2. Gameplay

The latest gameplay overview trailer for Rise of the Ronin is an absolute feast for the eyes. We get a closer look at the overall sword-slashing action and gunplay. As a bonus, we also saw the protagonist use a grappling hook and kite to navigate the skies of Bakumatsu, Japan!
Rise of the Ronin draws inspiration from acclaimed titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro, blending their strengths with Team Ninja’s own signature style from games like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Ninja Gaiden.
Like Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima and Nioh, you can wield various stances. The enemies in the game have specific strengths and weaknesses against certain stances. You’ll need to switch up your stance depending on the enemy you’re facing, which adds a layer of strategy to the combat.

The trailer also features a claw-bearing enemy that resembles the formidable Long-arm Centipede Giraffe from Sekiro!
Moreover, the grappling hook our ronin employs to glide through the air is a mechanic borrowed straight from Sekiro’s toolkit. It’s as if Team Ninja has carefully curated the best elements from their own titles and other iconic games, fusing them and infusing them with their trademark over-the-top action.
The trailer also showcases different weapons the hero can wield, including a flamethrower-esque firearm called the Fire Pipe. The parry mechanics in the game seem similar to Wo Long and Sekiro, and you can also backstab enemies to deal massive damage. With its fast and fluid combat design, the game will surely please hardcore action lovers worldwide.

Rise of the Ronin is going to be a PS5 exclusive. Unfortunately, players on PC, Xbox, or Switch will be missing out on this grand adventure.
However, don’t lose hope just yet! Many PS5 exclusives, including Ghost of Tsushima, got a PC port. So Rise of the Ronin might just reach your platform, if not soon, then perhaps later down the line.
