Competition: Championship

Market: Southampton win

Odds: 1/2 @ Pribet

Hoping to skyrocket their way into the automatic promotion places on Saturday afternoon, Southampton will welcome Sheffield Wednesday to St. Mary’s.

Starting with the hosts, although Southampton might have endured a real Premier League nightmare last season as they lost their top-flight status, Russell Martin’s men have their sights set on securing an immediate return. Last seen extending on their FA Cup adventure as they breezed their way to a routine 4-0 romp against Walsall, the former Swansea boss has seen his squad gain a string of plaudits. Opening up Saturday’s showdown sat just three points adrift of breaking into the automatic promotion places, Southampton are unbeaten in all of their previous 19 straight appearances across all competitions – a run that stems all the way back to September 23rd. Really impressing with their free-scoring performances in the final third, the Saints have also gained a reputation for their continued success on home soil. Including a 5-0 victory against Swansea last month, Martin’s men have won all of their last eight contests at St. Mary’s.

As for the visitors, while Sheffield Wednesday might still find themselves at the heart of a Championship relegation scrap, the Owls have certainly breathed life back into their charge for survival. Last seen extending on their own FA Cup adventure as they stormed their way to a 4-0 win against Cardiff, Danny Rohl’s side should find the mood in their camp at a season-high. However, although Saturday’s guests might have won all of their previous three appearances against Championship opposition, they will be bracing themselves for a massive challenge here. Showing some rather glaring issues on the road and losing eight of their last 10 contests away from Hillsborough, Wednesday should also be concerned by a nightmare record against the promotion contenders. Losing all of their last three straight trips to St. Mary’s and without an away win on the south coast since way back in 1997, we are expecting a home victory this weekend.
