Max Muncy Details His Off-Season Workout Regimen


As Max Muncy is headed into year nine of his major league career, the two-time All-Star and former World Series champion is looking to continue his upward trajectory after dealing with a long road back from a brutal elbow injury.

In October 2021, Muncy tore the UCL in his left elbow in a freak collision at first base. Sidelined for the entire postseason, Muncy rushed back in 2022 and finished the season with an unsightly .196/.329/.384 slash line. His OPS+ improved from 100 in 2022 to 115 in 2023, but Muncy’s .212 batting average last season suggested he still had room for improvement at the plate.

In an interview on the Foul Territory podcast Wednesday, Muncy dove into how his offseason regimen has looked as he seeks to improve in 2024.

“Every day is pretty much the same. Wake up, have my breakfast, go to my workouts. That’s 3, 4 hours because it’s a lot of stretching and mobility stuff along with my workouts. In the cage right after that. Then home to be dad.”

Health has been less and less of a question mark in two seasons since Muncy’s elbow injury. His only visit to the IL last year was an 11-day stint in June to rest a strained left hamstring.

Being healthy enough to play consistently can only facilitate Muncy’s improvement at the plate. He is coming off two consecutive seasons in which he played more than 135 games, and would love nothing more than to make it three in a row.

In the podcast, Muncy discussed his approach of spending a few hours a day on exercise and dedicating the rest of his time to being a dad. Although parenting is one of the toughest jobs out there, his strategy of not overexerting himself — specifically in the weight room — has proven to be effective.

“I feel like once you hit a certain point, there’s really only so much stronger you’re going to get, so what good does it do to absolutely kill yourself with heavy lifting? Obviously I’m still lifting heavy but I’m not trying to max out right now. I’m more focused on trying to stay mobile and flexibility, things that will help me out – running and defense – trying to stay on top of all that.”

While the Dodgers’ roster will have a new look after signing blockbuster free agents Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, their cast of position players looks largely unchanged for now.

The Dodgers’ infield figures to feature Muncy as the starting third baseman, Freddie Freeman at first base, Mookie Betts at second, and Gavin Lux starting at shortstop. Miguel Rojas should be available to platoon in the infield as needed, and left fielder Chris Taylor also presents an emergency option to back up Muncy at third base.

On the heels of signing a new two-year, $24 million contract, Muncy has every incentive to stay healthy, productive, and nimble enough to play the hot corner for another full season.
