Former Australian spinner Rodney Hogg has taken credit for motivating the West Indies cricket team to perform well in the recent Test match against Australia in Brisbane. Hogg’s comments came after the West Indies’ 10-wicket loss in Adelaide, where he had criticized weak teams coming over to play and predicted Mitchell Starc‘s dominance with the pink ball in Brisbane.
In an interview with Channel 10 after the Adelaide Test, Hogg had remarked that weak sides should not play against stronger teams. He had also predicted that Starc would decimate the West Indies with the pink ball in the upcoming Test match in Brisbane.
However, after the West Indies‘ victory in Brisbane, Hogg claimed that his comments had played a significant role in reinventing West Indies Test cricket. He stated that the longer the series went on, the better the West Indies players performed, despite starting with six inexperienced players without a Test cap.
“Well, apparently, I’ve reinvented West Indies Test cricket. They were hopeless before I made those comments, and they’ve all jumped up and been motivated to play well,” said Hogg in a statement to sen.com.au.
“They came here with six guys that didn’t have a Test cap, and they were so inexperienced, and you sort of thought, ‘Well, they are a bunch of hopeless players’, but give them some game time, a few of them showed, some real ability, didn’t they? The better that the longer the two games went on, the better they got,” he added.
Following their victory in Brisbane, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite had expressed his team’s desire to prove that they were not ‘pathetic,’ as Hogg had suggested. The West Indies’ victory was particularly impressive considering their early struggles in the match, as they were 64-5 on Day 1 of the second Test.
“When I looked at the West Indies in that first innings in this second Test, I was having a look here, and I’m thinking to myself: ‘How good was my prediction?’ They were 5/65, and Starc had three wickets … it was looking like a dead-set two-and-a-half-day game. What an amazing performance. It was fantastic to see them given an opportunity to play a second Test match against Australia,” remarked Hogg.
Shamar Joseph played a crucial role in West Indies’ victory, claiming seven wickets in the second innings to help the team prevail by eight runs. The victory was a significant achievement for the West Indies, showcasing their resilience and determination against a formidable Australian side.
