Dodgers Reportedly Tried to Send Michael Busch to White Sox in Dylan Cease Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers cleared two spots on their 40-man roster earlier this week when they traded top prospect Michael Busch and reliever Yency Almonte to the Chicago Cubs for prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope.

While it was a bit of a surprise to see the Dodgers trade Busch in a non-blockbuster deal, they did come out of the trade with a great young left-handed pitcher with immense potential in Ferris.

In the aftermath of the trade, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the Dodgers did, in fact, include Busch in trade packages for that “blockbuster” deal. In this case, it was with the Chicago White Sox for Dylan Cease.

“Before trading infielder Michael Busch to the Chicago Cubs, the Dodgers included him in some of their offers to the White Sox for Cease, according to sources briefed on the discussions.”

This doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, as the Dodgers have been reported to be among the teams talking trade with the White Sox all offseason long. And if the Dodgers were going to make a big deal like this one, it almost felt like a given that Busch would be involved.

The fact that the two teams got to the stage of exchanging names and trade packages shows the Dodgers were seriously interested in adding Cease, but a deal obviously never came to fruition.

The Dodgers clearly felt that the deal with the Cubs was the best they could do, and getting a player with Ferris’ potential is no small feat.

While Dodger fans may not have expected Busch to be the headliner in a deal — as opposed to the top prospect being packaged for an All-Star — it’s clear the Dodgers did their due diligence in attempting to find a home for Busch this offseason.
