Former Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urías Won’t Face Felony Charges in L.A. County, Per Report

Free agent pitcher Julio Urías will not face felony charges in Los Angeles County stemming from his domestic violence arrest Sept. 3, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez:

Urías was placed on administrative leave following the incident, effectively ending a Los Angeles Dodgers career that began in 2016. He became a free agent at the end of the 2023 season, but has had to wait on the sidelines while teams wait and see the legal outcome of his case.

As Gonzalez noted, the legal case against Urías might not be over. Even if he is able to avoid punishment under the law, it would come as no surprise if Urías faces supplemental discipline from Major League Baseball in 2024. The 27-year-old pitcher was previously suspended 20 games by MLB for a 2019 incident under the league’s domestic violence policy. No player has been disciplined twice under the policy.

Unlike the first incident, authorities can proceed with the help of both witnesses and video evidence this time. As ESPN reported in September:

The report said Department of Public Safety officers were patrolling outside the stadium after the Inter Miami vs. LAFC soccer match in which Lionel Messi played in front of numerous celebrities. They were contacted by someone, whose name was not publicly identified, regarding a physical altercation between a man and a woman.The report said DPS officers talked to the individuals involved and determined a physical altercation occurred. The investigation resulted in Urías’ arrest on suspicion of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.Additionally, DPS assistant chief Chris Carr told ESPN’s Paula Lavigne that a civilian captured the incident on a cell phone, and that video is now in the possession of law enforcement.

Urías went 11-8 with a 4.60 ERA in 21 starts last season prior to his arrest. He went 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA over parts of eight seasons with the Dodgers.
